A headache.
A screeching, undying, unyielding headache. It hits Ika and Mako equally as they... did whatever they did. Ika just barely has enough motor and brain function to remember that there's a muscle on the side of your neck, supposedly, if she could just crane it and rub it...
Just before the pain could reach her fingers, she manages to find that muscle, whatever it was, but it not do much in the way of helping. She could at least see without being blinded by stars, but it wasn't much in the way of being helpful.
What she could see, though, was a sight to behold - it looked like the ground she was accustomed to, what with the trees and branches and the sky, but it's moving? It doesn't feel like it on her feet, or the rest of her body, but the world around her jiggled and moved with all the intent of a young child with a crayon.
"Ough... Ika, sweetie, a little help?"
Ika ran over to the pained Mako. She, too, was gripping her head in almost pure agony. Ika reached out a hand, allowing Mako to hold it with her other free hand, and pull herself up. She tried to at first, and did stumble, but eventually got up on her own two feet.
"Thanks..."
"Anything for you." Ika looked around. "Do you know where this is...?"
Mako, too, joined the hunt for meaning. "Uhm... A kid's drawing, maybe?"
"My thoughts exactly... We don't exactly conform, though. We kind of stand out."
Indeed, she was correct - Ika put out a hand, noticing that it was perfectly still. She looked back at the trees - they wobbled to and fro, as if pushed by some unseen wind. Back to her hand - still as ever.
"If there are people here, Mako, do you think they'd hurt us?"
Mako put a finger on her chin. "I don't think so, but, I also know that's your roundabout way of asking me for the key."
She was right. Ika owned a sword, but she always kept it locked, only entrusting two keys - one to her life partner, Mako, and one to another friend of hers, who clearly wasn't here right now.
"You read me like a book, love."
Mako only snickered to herself. "Alright, sure. But don't hurt anyone without talking first!"
As promised, a key was procured from Mako's pocket, which was swiftly used to unlock the hilt of Ika's sword, allowing it to be drawn. But she wouldn't draw it quite yet - a strange song was heard over a hill they were close to. It sounded strange - three fast beeps, then three slow ones, then three fast ones again.
"Do you know what that means, Mako? The beeps?"
"Uh..." Mako used all of her computing power to take a guess. "They're hungry?"
Ika shook her head. "It's morse code. S-O-S. Save Our Ship. Someone's in danger here."
"I totally knew that!", Mako lied. "We should probably go get to them, though, right?"
Ika nodded. "They may have answers. In any case, it is *someone*, and that's better than the *nobody* we know in this world." She pointed through between the hills and cliffs that surrounded them. "If we travel through there, we might be able to get there quicker."
The two started their trek, being careful to look for anyone that was alive. They heard the occasional rustle of leaves, but otherwise, nothing was living. Ika took the time to recollect on how they got here. That strange origami person - Mystery, is what they called themselves. Said there was a portal just outside The Neon. They also said that it could help in finding...
No, no, there was no way Mazki, Ika's supposed mother, would be here. Right...? This world definitely wasn't theirs to claim, that's for sure, but I suppose if she's been here all along...
Ika sighed. "I just want some closure..."
"What?" Mako took a second to re-calibrate. "Oh! You mean your mom, right?"
"Yeah. I never got to meet her. I just hope that Mystery was right."
"You listened to that piece of cardboard? I couldn't wrap my head around it if they tried. Kings and Queens and whatever, just goes right over me."
"They're a little insane, but who isn't these days, Mako? At least it's a lead." Ika looked at a tree, which she *swore* had something jump into its leaves. "Plus, we're already here, aren't we?"
Mako gave Ika an endearing look. "Whatever you say, sweetie. As long as I can spend some time with you. Even in this... crayon land."
"It doesn't look half bad if you ask me. I could get used to it, honestly."
